FAQ

Questions people often ask before starting.

If yours isn’t here, send it through the enquiry form. There is no such thing as a silly question.

Getting started

I’m nervous about contacting a therapist. What should I do?

It is courageous to reach out and ask for support in a challenging time, and you have that courage already. I offer a free discovery call so we can spend a little time together first. Working together is a joint, collaborative decision.

What happens when I get in touch?

Contact me through the enquiry form or HelloSelf. We then have a free 15-minute discovery call, online or by telephone. I ask what has been going on in your life and hope to be the one to work with you. There is no commitment if you decide not to come with me. If we go ahead, the next step is a 60-minute assessment, followed by your first therapy sessions.

What should I expect at my first session?

We talk about your safe space and confidentiality, who you can contact if things feel overwhelming, and a risk assessment. I ask about any medication you take, your employment, your general mental state (mood, concentration, sleep and so on) and your family background.

Sessions

How long are sessions?

The assessment is 60 minutes. Therapy sessions after that are 50 minutes, and EMDR sessions are 90 minutes.

How often will we meet?

Weekly to begin with, so you can learn about the tools, techniques and models I use. As your confidence grows we can space sessions out, working together.

How many sessions will I need?

It varies a lot, and I let you guide me. Some people come for 8 to 10 sessions. The average is 16 to 20, depending on what you are working on and how much you practise between sessions.

Is there work between sessions?

Yes. Therapy is not just about turning up. It is about applying and practising the tools and techniques between sessions too. It is a process whatever therapy you choose, so give it time and allow time for yourself.

Will I stay with the same therapist?

Yes, I will be your therapist throughout.

What if I miss a few sessions and feel embarrassed?

Please come back. It happens, and you are welcome.

Which type of therapy is right for me?

I offer ACT, FACT, MBCT and EMDR. You don’t need to decide in advance. We choose together, based on what you are experiencing. You can read more on the services page.

Where and who

Do you offer face-to-face sessions?

Not yet. Sessions are currently online by video or by telephone. I am keen to offer in-person sessions at a clinic in the Ferndown area in the future.

Where do you work?

I am based in Ferndown, Dorset, and work with adults in Dorset and across southern England. I am cautious about working overseas because of risk and the need for local support.

Who do you work with?

Adults aged 18 and over, including many professionals from business, education, finance and healthcare. I especially enjoy working with low mood, low self-esteem, burnout, life transitions, and women around perimenopause and menopause.

Who don’t you work with?

I don’t work with anyone under 18, with couples, or with gambling, sex or pornography addiction. Your GP or a specialist service can point you to the right support.

Fees and booking

How much do sessions cost?

ACT and MBCT sessions are £90, EMDR sessions are £120, and returning clients pay £85. The discovery call is free. See the pricing page for details.

Can I use private health insurance?

I work with a variety of insurers. Please check your policy first. I can provide invoices.

How do I book?

Use the enquiry form, or book through HelloSelf, where I am also listed.

When are you available?

I don’t work weekends, and I don’t see clients after 5.30pm in the evening.

What is your cancellation policy?

Please give 24 hours’ notice to cancel or rearrange. Later cancellations are charged in full.

Is this a crisis service?

No. I do not provide a crisis response service. If you have urgent wellbeing concerns or are in crisis, contact your GP, GP out of hours, NHS 111 or the Samaritans, or go to your local A&E. Call 999 in an emergency.
